Mending Lines and Mending Souls
The Lower Sacramento River is the largest river in California, originating in the Klamath Mountains and running approximately 400 miles. It flows out of Shasta Lake and continues down to Keswick Dam, which is about three miles north of Redding. This river is a big tailwater stream with smooth areas of water interspersed with riffles and long, deep pools. The trout population here is abundant, and the aquatic insect life is excellent. However, fishing the smooth areas can be challenging, as the trout can easily spot your presentation. Additionally, predicting flow levels and fishing conditions can be tricky due to water discharges from nearby powerful creeks and agricultural needs in the Central Valley of California.
The Lower Sacramento River offers year-round fishing because its water remains cool throughout all seasons. Spring is an excellent time for trout fishing. Look out for hatches of Blue-Winged Olives and March Browns in March and April. Access to the Lower Sacramento River is excellent. There are six boat launches for drift boats along the river, and it closely parallels Highway 5.
